What are steviol glycosides?

The sweetness of stevia comes from steviol glycosides, from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. Sweeteners made of steviol glycosides are a non-nutritive and often have zero-calories.

Steviol glycosides are extracted from the Stevia plant by an elaborate process and are up to 450 times sweeter than sugar. The non-caloric sweetener has proven to be beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and obesity.
